TOPIC: What is the purpose of the virus TI Polar live?

What is the purpose of the virus TI Polar live? 2 years, 7 months ago #51510

I wonder how the Access virus Polar is used live.
on all pics and vids, its only connected with the power cord and one line output. (so no midi or usb ect.)
and it don't seems that Liam plays the Rom-E program 107 Spaz preset that is the lead in 'omen' so it must come out Ableton live.
Is the polar there for commercial goals?

I heard the Omen lead was a MicroKorg preset? Not sure, I could be wrong...

I'm very dubious as to Liam's live input; in older FOTL era videos you can see the samples being controlled with the W30 clearly, but these days he just seems to bash about on everything, I can't keep track on what he's controlling. I heard he went crazy at a tech guy when his Virus blew on stage though, so it must have a fair bit of input.

I'd love to see the workings of his live setup.

I ensure you, it's the preset I mentioned of the virus, if you want proof I play I t for you on my Polar and sent it to you just give your email in pm. I know liam has more fun with live performances because of ableton live. I'm going to adapt some things of that for 'No Repair' my live formation but I use Renoise. Before I go to far in detail, and you know some of yourself I see, I feel like the bottom line is: why don't many people talk about these things.

Yeah, I've always wanted to know the setup. What controls what, what is lined out etc.
Hmm, imagine if none of the synths do anything and he just opens an mp3 and hits space

Well after the Sydney Hordern Pavillion gig I can shed a bit of light on his live set up there.

Hardware Synths:
Sequential Circuits Pro One
Korg MicroKorg
Access Virus TI Polar

Software:
Ableton Live
Reason 4.0

How it all works together I'm not entirely sure, but I'm assuming Ableton is used as the master sequencer, and most other synths, hardware and software, fire off samples etc.

Sorry to disapoint you all but what he actually does is make a mixtape (casette) and just plays it on a really loud Yamaha stereo during the gigs... And Keith and Maxim also mime incase you were wondering

On most of the Invaders era live videos Liam is on his Virus most of the time. He twists some knobs or holds from the side of the synth with his left hand and taps the highest keys with his right hand while waving his head from side to side and stuff. For example in Warriors Dance, when the beats are on he does that, and when the vocal sample comes he moves to the other synth to play some little high bleeps that can be heard clearly. With his Virus he plays extra notes too on many tunes, but I can't see what's with the furious tapping and jamming with no sound coming out...

I don't understand it either knowing there is no MIDI cables attached nor USB
and for the people that are curious, I sampled the ROM E 107 Spaz sound playing the omen lead on my Virus Polar:

It's all just played through his laptops. He adds some little synth sounds with his virus, but that's all he really does live. All the equipment is for show.

Well if the Virus is the source of the Omen lead then he could just line it out for that. Although this isn't the case as you can hear that he's not playing it live.
A mystery.

It's not boring, it's actually very interesting; the fact that the Virus doesn't have any midi out on stage makes me wonder how much of his setup is actually necessary.

I'm telling you man, it's all for show. Liam would have to prove it somehow

3:24 Shows the samples being used the W30 and 2:45 shows a few notes...so I don't think it's ALL for show

Oh no doubt he used them during the Fat Of The Land days, but that was before he was using laptops at the gigs
